Wahida Seisay, 19

School: University of Cambridge

Course: Education (BA)

Year: Second

Grade average: 2:1

Wahida has ambitions to enter into the film and theatre space as a producer, director and marketer. She is already nurturing and showcasing her talents in these areas by directing two relatively large productions at uni, one with a cast and crew of 25+ people, at Cambridge’s ADC Theatre. The theatre is one of the oldest university playhouses in the country, and has helped launch the careers of theatre luminaries such as Sir Ian McKellen and Dame Emma Thompson.

Her most recent directorial outing was in February of this year when she directed Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night for a week-long run, working with an ethnically diverse cast and crew to add a modern spin. Her skills as an effective leader were highlighted as, in addition to the cast and crew, the play was edited to be representative of different cultures and traditions, so everyone was reliant on her to bring the creative vision to life.

Her success as Director led to her being selected as Director’s Rep for the Cambridge University Amateur Dramatic Club, which involves her conducting freshers’ workshops, attending meetings for funding and organising talks to champion diversity.

This year she has also launched her HerWorld. UK brand, a community which provides a space for education, relatability and recognition for black female creatives. Wahida also recently completed a highly competitive six-month mentoring scheme with Prime Video, Amazon Studios and the Creative Mentor Network.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

“To be an executive or creative director for a theatre, with a number of short films under my belt.”
