During lockdown, Joba started a social entrepreneurship project aiming to reduce the stress of elderly care home residents in his local area of Hertfordshire. He contacted care homes to find out what resources they lacked, and launched a fundraiser to buy board and table games for people with dementia. He distributed these to almost 700 elderly care home residents, contacted local reporters to get the word out and honed his Excel skills in the process. “I put myself in those people’s shoes and wanted to help,” he says. “I found that games, especially things like chess, were very good for people with neurodegenerative disorders and a lot of care homes didn’t have the resources to buy these things.” The initiative was so impactful it was covered by local press.

Volunteering as Co-Head of Entrepreneurial Research at Warwick Entrepreneur Society, Joba’s role is to lead the production of reports on a vast array of topical issues. He has recruited a team of research executives to produce the write-ups, which are aimed at helping students keen on starting their own businesses. “We aim to provide members with vital information they can use for any entrepreneurial pursuits.” Invited speakers, meanwhile, included Avi Sharma from The Apprentice.

For his placement year, Joba aims to work in banking or consulting, with an eye on a grad job in one of those fields. His ultimate ambition? To found his own company: “I read widely on topics from smart cities to computer science, so I would look to start a business anywhere there is a gap.”

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

“Running my own business or progressing successfully through a firm of my choice.”
