Masharah was proud to be picked as one of just five curators for the We Are Birmingham exhibition in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. The project was developed with Birmingham Festival 2022 and the Commonwealth Games so it was a really big deal. As part of her role, Masharah had to conduct a speech in front of funders at the exhibit and she felt a lot of pressure. She had stepped way out of her comfort zone because what she said would have a direct impact on whether they would fund young people like herself in the future.

Masharah was asked to fill this role after she put on an exhibition with five other women of colour that had taken a year for them to organise. So, when she was picked to do the speech, Masharah made sure their views and experiences were articulated in the best way possible.

Public speaking didn’t come naturally to Masharah as she grew up a shy, introverted child who suffered abuse and neglect. She was homeless for two years prior to coming to university and had to display enormous courage to change her situation. But study was always her safe space, and through determination and fortitude, she saw an opportunity to take control of her life and grabbed it with both hands.

Masharah was also Campus Ambassador for the law firm Reed Smith, using her unique experiences to motivate people both in and out of university to take a leap and consider law as a career.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

“As a law firm associate, continuing with social impact projects and speaking about my passion, politics.”
