Lydie Kitenge

Lydie Kitenge, 22

School: Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry

Course: Medicine (MBBS)

Year: Final

Grade average: 2:1

When Lydie first started making content as an educational content creator in 2019, she saw that there was a huge discrepancy in the types of students that were getting into medicine. As someone who went to an under-resourced high school and then to an elite university, she saw that what was available to young people from state schools was very different.

So Lydie started making content across multiple platforms providing tips and advice for students who otherwise would not have access to that information and resources. She’s managed to do it alongside

medical school for the past four years and at this point has 100k+ subscribers and followers across her social media platforms.

At first, Lydie made long-form videos on YouTube about how to get into medicine. Then, about a year ago, she pivoted her content towards how she survives medical school as a first-generation student from a low socio-economic background. Lydie’s now adapted by making short-form content for Instagram and TikTok, which, in turn, has allowed her to reach a wider audience.

Following graduation, Lydie would like to go on to be a foundation doctor and dedicate some hours each week to her social mobility initiative. She’s also currently in talks with Queen Mary University to potentially work on a post-graduate project with them as she has a good relationship with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

“I would prefer to be in a community setting in my own clinic, so I’ll probably go down the GP route.”
