Rene Awambeng

Director and Head of Client Relations, Afreximbank, Cairo

With over two decades of experience in Pan-African banking, Mr. René Awambeng has established himself as a seasoned professional. His journey led him to the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in 2016, where he assumed the role of Director, Client Relations. 


In this capacity, he spearheads the formulation and execution of client-centric business strategies for Afreximbank. His responsibilities encompass overseeing the seamless delivery of all bank products to the clientele and effectively managing the operations of Afreximbank's branch offices. Mr. Awambeng is a recognised figure in the discourse of current trends, contributing his insights on Commodity Trade Finance, Regional Business, African Trade, and Infrastructure Development. He regularly engages in discussions on these subjects at prestigious international banking conferences and seminars.

Before joining Afreximbank, Mr. Awambeng served as the Group Head of Global Corporates, Regional Corporates, and Commodity Finance at the Corporate and Investment Bank of Ecobank Transnational Inc. for four years. His responsibilities took him across Paris, France, Lagos, Nigeria, and London.


Preceding this role, he held the position of Executive Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer at Ecobank Rwanda for two years and later assumed the same role at Ecobank Democratic Republic of Congo for an additional two years.


Hailing from Cameroon, Mr. Awambeng holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Yaoundé and earned his MBA from the University of Nottingham Business School. Additionally, he is affiliated with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.
